How to make a DIY collection folder
As a teenager, I made tons of folders like this and kept my little treasures in them. Even today I still find them super practical: for postcards, stamps, clips, stickers or important collections of notes.
Material list
Cardboard (e.g. from an old shipping box)
nice paper (or fabric!)
Glue that you prefer to work with (liquid glue, glue stick, double-sided tape, spray glue)
tape
Decorative ribbon
at least 6 envelopes
2 pencils
Scissors

Instructions
We'll start with the cover:
1. Place one of the envelopes on the square corner of your cardboard. (If it's not rectangular, you'll need to cut it first.)
2. Place your pencil on the long edge of the envelope, use it as a ruler and draw a line with the second pencil.
3. Repeat step 2 on the bottom edge.
You have now drawn a rectangle that is one pencil thickness larger than your envelopes, both vertically and horizontally.
4. Cut out the rectangle.
5. Place the cut rectangle on your remaining piece of cardboard, draw a line all the way around and cut out a second rectangle.
You now have two cardboard cards of the same size in front of you.
Next, the cardboard cards are decorated:
6. Cut out a piece of the beautiful paper slightly larger than the cardboard card (approx. plus 2 cm per side).
7. Place the paper face up in front of you.
8. Apply glue to the cardboard card, turn it over, place it in the middle of the paper and press it firmly.
9. All four corners of the paper are cut at an obtuse angle. Only cut up to approx. 1 mm in front of the cardboard. If you cut too far, you will later see cardboard at the corners. If you cut too little, the paper will lump at the corners.
10. Fold the edges onto the cardboard and glue them in place.
Now come the ribbons:
10. Place the two pasted pieces of cardboard next to each other with the inside facing up. So that a pencil fits between them. Leave the pencil alone for now.
11. Place two ribbons approx. 14 cm long across the pencil. They should be approximately the same distance from the top and bottom edges of the cardboard. Tape the ribbons to the inside of the cards with tape.
Note: If you use significantly more envelopes than the suggested six, you will have to place the cardboard further apart.
12. Place two longer ribbons centered on the right and left outer sides of the cardboard and glue these in place too.
The cover is ready. Now come the compartments:
13. Seal the envelopes.
14. Cut a very fine strip off one long side of each envelope so that the side is open. Use the same page for each cover so it will look more consistent later.
Tip: If you like it rustic, you can also open the letter with a letter opener or something similar.
Glue the envelopes together as follows:
15. Place an envelope in front of you with the open side facing up. Stick a piece of double-sided tape (or glue of your choice) vertically in the middle from the top to the bottom. Because my double-sided tape is rather narrow. I stuck two strips next to each other.
16. Glue the second envelope - oriented identically to the first, open side on top - onto the first.
17. Repeat steps 15 and 16 until all envelopes are stuck together.
If you can unfold the stacked envelopes like this, you've done everything right:
Finally, the envelopes are glued into the cardboard cover:
18. Place the cardboard cover open in front of you. The inside faces upwards.
19. Place double sided tape (or other glue) on the inside of the cardboard. Leave a free edge all around.
20. Now place your stack of envelopes centered on one side and glue it in place. Important: The open side faces outwards!
21. Carefully fold the other cover's side closed so that the top of the envelope stack is centered on the inside.
Your folder is ready!
