For me, a cutting mat, along with a cutting knife and ruler, is one of the essentials when crafting.

The cutting mat is a stable base that - unlike newspapers or cardboard - is not cut by the knife - which is why they are also called "self-healing cutting mats". So you can use the cutting mat again and again as a base for cutting.
