DIY Sammelmappe

As a teenager, I made piles of such folders and kept my little treasures in them. Even today, I still find them super practical: for postcards, stamps, paper clips, stickers or important collections of notes.

What you need*

Cardboard (e.g. from an old shipping box)

nice paper

Glue you prefer to work with (I used narrow double-sided tape [Affiliate Link*] and liquid glue here)

Decorative ribbon

at least 6 envelopes

2 pencils

We'll start with the cover:

1. Place one of the covers on the rectangular corner of your cardboard. (If it's not rectangular, you'll need to trim it first.)

2. Place your pencil along the long edge of the cover, use it as a ruler, and draw a line with the second pencil.

3. Repeat step 2 on the bottom edge.
You have now drawn a rectangle that is one pencil thickness larger than your envelopes in both height and width.

4. Cut out the rectangle.

5. Place the cut-out rectangle on your remaining piece of cardboard, draw a line around it, and cut out a second rectangle.

You now have two pieces of cardboard of the same size in front of you.

Next, glue the cardboard cards:

6. Cut a piece of the decorative paper slightly larger than the cardboard card (approx. plus 2 cm per side).

7. Place the paper with the back side facing up in front of you.

8. Apply glue to the cardboard, turn it over, center it on the paper, and press down firmly.

9. Cut all four corners of the paper at an obtuse angle, cutting only to about 1 mm from the cardboard. If you cut too far, you will later see cardboard at the corners. If you cut too little, the paper will bunch up at the corners.

10. Fold the edges onto the cardboard and glue them down.

Glue the second piece of cardboard in the same way.

Now it's time for the ribbons:

10. Place the two taped cardboard pieces next to each other with the inside facing up, so that a pencil fits in between them. You can leave the pencil there for now.

11. Place two ribbons, each about 14 cm long, across the pencil. They should be roughly equidistant from the top and bottom edges of the cardboard pieces. Secure the ribbons to the inside of the cards with tape. 

Note: If you use significantly more envelopes than the suggested six, you will need to place the cardboard pieces further apart accordingly.

12. Place two longer ribbons centered on the right and left outer sides of the cardboard pieces and glue them down as well.

The cover is finished.

Inspiration

Make your very own folder! Alternatively, you can cover the front with fabric or decorate it with Washi tape. Instead of envelopes, you can also use paper or old book pages (upcycling!) and seal them with pretty Washi tape on the sides.
